A French Breakfast - Cinnamon French Toast

6 min read

There’s something special about slowing down and making breakfast feel like an occasion. Whether it’s a quiet Sunday morning, a holiday breakfast with family, or simply a chance to enjoy a slower start to the day, this Cinnamon French Toast is one of those recipes that turns an ordinary morning into something memorable. Golden and crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, every bite is filled with warm cinnamon, sweet vanilla, and all the comforting flavors that make breakfast my favorite meal of the day.

To me, “A French Breakfast” is less about what’s on the plate and more about the way it’s enjoyed. It’s about slowing down, setting aside the rush of everyday life, and being fully present for a few quiet moments before the day begins. While life doesn’t always allow for leisurely mornings, and sometimes breakfast really is a bowl of cereal or an apple on the way out the door, there’s something refreshing about choosing to slow down whenever you can.

Imagine the smell of cinnamon filling your kitchen, maple syrup warming on the stove, and a hot cup of coffee or tea waiting beside your plate. Whether you’re sharing breakfast with the people you love or enjoying the peacefulness of your own company, those small moments of presence have a way of making an ordinary morning feel extraordinary.

That’s the kind of breakfast this recipe reminds me of. Not one that’s rushed or eaten between errands, but one that’s meant to be savored. A breakfast that invites you to linger at the table just a little longer, enjoy good conversation, or comfortable silence, and begin the day feeling nourished in more ways than one. Sometimes the simplest recipes become the ones that create the sweetest memories.

One of my favorite things about this French toast is how simple it is to make. With just a handful of everyday ingredients, you can create a breakfast that looks beautiful enough for brunch guests but is easy enough for any weekday morning. Whether you’re serving it with fresh blueberries and blackberries, crispy breakfast sausage, a dollop of whipped cream, or a generous drizzle of pure maple syrup, it’s a meal that feels both comforting and a little indulgent.

Breakfast has a way of bringing people together, and recipes like this remind me that some of the sweetest moments happen around the kitchen table. From slow weekend mornings with family to special celebrations and holiday brunches, this Cinnamon French Toast is a recipe you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again. I hope it inspires you to slow down, savor each bite, and make a few delicious memories along the way.

Ingredients

Cinnamon French Toast

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • 1 loaf cinnamon-sugar swirl bread, preferably unsliced
  • 6 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk (1% or 2% milk works as well)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon packed light brown sugar

Homemade Caramel Syrup

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Homemade Vanilla Whipped Cream

  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

For Serving

  • Fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Fresh blueberries, blackberries, or your favorite berry medley
  • Extra maple syrup or caramel syrup (optional)

Instructions

Homemade Caramel Syrup

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, brown sugar, and heavy cream. Cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the French toast.

Cinnamon French Toast

Using a serrated knife, slice the cinnamon swirl bread into 8 thick slices, about ¾ to 1 inch thick.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, salt, vanilla extract, and brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and well combined.

Preheat an electric griddle to 325°F, or heat a large skillet over medium heat. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, coating both sides evenly. Allow any excess batter to drip off before placing it on the hot cooking surface.

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter on the griddle or skillet. Arrange the coated slices on the hot surface, leaving a little space between each piece so they cook evenly. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until each slice is beautifully golden brown and lightly crisp around the edges.

Transfer the cooked French toast to a wire rack or serving platter. If cooking in batches, carefully wipe the skillet clean with a paper towel and melt the remaining tablespoon of butter before adding more slices. French toast is best enjoyed fresh from the griddle, as letting it sit too long can cause it to lose its crisp exterior.

Homemade Vanilla Whipped Cream

While the French toast cooks, prepare the whipped cream. In a chilled mixing bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat on high speed until medium to stiff peaks form, about 1–3 minutes. Be careful not to overmix. Gently fold in the vanilla extract and, if desired, a tiny pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.

To Serve

Stack the warm French toast onto serving plates and top with a generous dollop of homemade vanilla whipped cream. Add fresh sliced strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or your favorite berry medley, then finish with a warm drizzle of homemade caramel syrup.

Serve immediately and enjoy every cozy, cinnamon filled bite.

As you clear the table and finish the last bite, my wish is that this breakfast leaves you with more than just a full stomach. Sometimes the smallest moments, sharing a meal, lingering over a second cup of coffee, or taking a few extra minutes before the day begins, are the ones we remember most. They remind us that life doesn’t always have to be rushed.

This Cinnamon French Toast has become one of my favorite recipes because it encourages exactly that. It’s simple enough for a quiet weekday morning, yet special enough for holidays, birthdays, weekend brunches, or whenever you want to make an ordinary day feel a little more meaningful. Whether you’re gathered around the table with family, catching up with friends, or enjoying the peaceful company of your own thoughts, I hope this recipe gives you an excuse to slow down and savor the moment.
